Plain gray concrete bakes in the Indiana sun and gets hot enough to make walking barefoot from the water to the chairs uncomfortable — sand matrix finish changes that. Sand matrix is a textured overlay system applied over a concrete base: fine silica sand embedded in a polymer-modified coating creates a surface that stays cooler underfoot, provides excellent wet traction, and takes integral color that holds up against UV and pool chemicals without peeling. New construction pours and resurfacing existing decks. Fixed-price quote within 48 hours.
Dark concrete and darker colored surfaces absorb more solar radiation and convert it to surface heat. In a central Indiana July, a plain gray concrete pool deck in full sun can reach surface temperatures well above ambient air temperature — hot enough to be uncomfortable on bare feet within seconds. Sand matrix addresses this through two mechanisms: the fine silica sand creates micro-shadows across the surface that reduce heat absorption, and the light neutral colors typically selected for pool decks (cream, tan, sandstone) reflect more solar radiation than medium gray.
The polymer-modified binder in a sand matrix overlay does something important for durability that standard concrete can't do on its own: it bonds to the existing concrete substrate and bridges micro-cracks. Pool decks are exposed to constant wet-dry cycling from splash zones, which creates stress at the surface. The polymer modifier gives the overlay enough flexibility to handle that movement without debonding — unlike thin cement-only overlays that crack and peel within a season.
Sand matrix can go over an existing concrete deck in good structural condition. The key word is structural — if the existing slab has heaved panels, large cracks exceeding 1/4 inch, or areas where the concrete is delaminating from below, resurfacing covers the problem but doesn't fix it, and the overlay will reflect those failures within a few seasons. On the estimate visit we evaluate the existing slab's condition and give an honest recommendation. Some decks genuinely can be resurfaced. Others need to come up first.
New pours: 2–3 days for base slab plus 1–2 days for overlay after slab cures. Resurfacing: typically 2 days — one for prep, one for overlay and sealer. Pool should be drained and covered during overlay application.
Measure deck area, assess existing slab condition (resurface) or site conditions (new pour), confirm color palette and drainage slope. Fixed-price quote within 48 hours.
New pour: remove existing deck, compact subgrade, set forms to grade with correct slope. Resurface: saw-cut and chase cracks, fill and level depressions, grind or scarify to create mechanical profile for overlay bond.
4000 PSI air-entrained mix placed and finished to proper drainage slope. Control joints cut at day 1. Allow 28-day cure before overlay — polymer overlay applied to green concrete will delaminate.
Polymer-modified primer applied to prepared surface. Primer penetrates the slab surface and provides the bonding layer for the overlay. Allow primer to cure per system spec before applying overlay.
Polymer-modified cementitious overlay applied at 3/16"–1/4" thickness. Fine silica sand broadcast evenly into the wet overlay coat. Back-roll to embed sand and achieve uniform texture. Work in sections to maintain a wet edge.
UV-stable color sealer applied in one or two coats after overlay cures. Color sealer locks the sand surface, provides UV protection, and sets the final color. Apply in even passes — lap lines show.
Termination edges inspected, coping interface sealed, deck cleaned of material waste. Walk through with homeowner. 60-day workmanship warranty issued. Pool can refill at 48 hours.
Fishers & Carmel: The highest concentration of residential in-ground pools in our service area. Fishers subdivision pools built in the 2000s and 2010s often have original concrete decks that are now cracking or spalling — prime resurfacing candidates if the slab is structurally sound. Carmel HOA communities sometimes specify deck finish type — sand matrix in a neutral tone (cream, slate, or sandstone) is typically approved as a quality finish.
Noblesville & Westfield: Newer pools in these markets often spec sand matrix from the start. Grand Park area properties in Westfield see heavy summer use — commercial pool and splash pad applications require the same overlay spec, just larger pours and commercial drainage design.
Anderson & Pendleton: Older residential pools with original coping and surround are common. We assess whether the coping itself needs replacement before we overlay — installing new sand matrix against failing coping creates a termination joint problem that shows up within a season or two. We scope coping work separately if needed.
Our sand matrix overlay application, drainage slope requirements, and slip resistance standards follow guidelines from the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) for pool deck construction, and ACI 310R Guide for the Design and Construction of Concrete Parking Lots (for drainage design principles applied to pool deck surround grade). Pool deck drainage slope minimums are specified in APSP standard 5B.
