Need to tear out one driveway, one sidewalk panel, one garage approach — without breaking the good slab next to it? We sawcut clean joint lines, score control breaks, and remove targeted sections. Adjacent concrete stays untouched. Most jobs are out and site cleared the same day, with concrete hauled to a recycling yard for RCA processing wherever facilities are available.
Concrete demolition isn't just "smash it and haul it." Hit the wrong slab the wrong way and the crack runs into the panel you wanted to keep. Selective demolition is surgical: cut clean lines, score control breaks, remove only what's coming out, protect everything else.
Foundation walls, structural footers, and full-building demo live on different pages — see Foundation Demolition and Sawcutting & Scoring. This page is selective slab and flatwork demo.
Concrete is brittle. Hit it hard enough and the energy travels through the slab until it finds a weak point — usually a hairline crack or joint in your good concrete six feet away. A full-depth sawcut along the removal perimeter creates a free edge. Once the slab is isolated, the breaker can work as aggressively as needed inside the cut line and the keepers don't feel a thing.
We cut at full slab depth — partial cuts are worse than no cut at all because they create a stress concentrator that telegraphs cracks downward into the keepers. Reinforcement gets cut with the slab. Pulling rebar through a partial cut tears the adjacent panel. We grind any exposed dowels flush before the new pour.
For interior or thin reinforced slabs, we score a 4-foot grid into the surface, then snap each panel free with a skid steer. Cleaner than a hammer, faster than a full sawcut, and the score lines double as lift points.
Removal lines marked, 811 utility locates verified, adjacent slabs photographed for pre-condition record.
Full slab depth diamond-blade cut along removal perimeter. Cutting water for dust. Slurry contained and vacuumed.
Score control breaks on large or reinforced sections. Hydraulic breaker stays 12" inside cut line. Slab broken into haul-sized pieces and lifted out with skid steer.
Debris hauled to recycling yard for RCA processing. Site magnet-swept for rebar fragments. Final broom. Ready for next phase.
Anderson: Construction noise ordinance limits demo work to 7 AM – 6 PM weekdays. ROW Excavation Permits required if removal touches the public right-of-way (apron, curb, sidewalk).
Carmel & Fishers: Dust-control plans required on commercial demo. We pre-wet, use cutting water, and stage hauling to minimize tracking onto streets. HOA approval handled separately. Carmel's 20-ft driveway-width limit applies to any driveway demo + replacement scope.
Noblesville: Old Town historic district has additional review for visible exterior demo. We submit photos and scope upfront.
Pendleton: Smaller scope, fewer restrictions, but I-69 corridor work crews regularly book us for staged removals.
Selective concrete demolition technique — sawcutting depth, equipment standoff distances, and recycling procedures — follows guidance from the National Demolition Association (NDA), the trade body that sets best practices for the demolition industry in the United States.
