The single most common cause of premature concrete failure on residential and commercial sites is organic material left under the slab — roots, buried stumps, demolition debris, and unstripped topsoil. Organic material compresses and decomposes under load, creating voids that allow the slab to flex, crack, and eventually fail. We strip topsoil to the depth of organic content (typically 6–10 inches in Madison, Hamilton, and Boone County) before any base stone or concrete is placed.
Root grubbing is more thorough than stump grinding alone. Grinding removes the stump to 6–12 inches below grade but leaves the lateral root system intact — roots that can occupy the top 18–24 inches of soil. For slabs and hardscape, we grub the root ball area and any lateral roots larger than 2 inches in diameter within the pour footprint. Ungrubbed roots shrink as they decay, leaving gaps directly under the concrete.
Rough grading moves large volumes of material to within ±0.2 feet of design elevation — this is the bulk cut and fill work done with a dozer or grader. Finish grading is the final precision pass that achieves the design drainage slopes and prepares the surface for base stone or topsoil placement. Conflating the two phases leads to over-cutting during rough grade and inadequate drainage slopes after finish — we sequence them separately to protect final elevation accuracy.
Typical residential lot site prep (5,000–10,000 sq ft) is complete in 1–2 days depending on clearing density and cut/fill volume. Commercial pads and larger acreage are quoted with a full day-count estimate based on site visit measurements.

Anderson & Pendleton: Madison County soils are dominated by Brookston and Crosby silt loam — high clay content, prone to wetness, and slow to drain. Topsoil depths run 6–10 inches on typical residential lots and can be deeper in previously farmed areas. Grading in spring and after heavy rain requires careful moisture management — compacting wet clay creates a hard pan that blocks drainage. We schedule grading operations to avoid wet soil conditions or use lime treatment when the project timeline doesn't allow waiting.
Pendleton & Noblesville: Active residential development along the I-69 corridor involves sites that were previously cultivated fields. These sites often have deeper topsoil (12–18 inches) requiring more stripping volume, and subsurface drainage tile that must be preserved or properly redirected before grading alters the surface drainage pattern.
Fishers & Carmel: Residential infill lots in mature Fishers and Carmel neighborhoods often have established tree root systems from adjacent property trees that extend under the new concrete footprint. We coordinate with the homeowner on root pruning plans when large specimen trees are within 20 feet of the pour area — aggressive grubbing within the drip line can destabilize adjacent trees.
Westfield: New construction in Westfield's SR-32 growth corridor involves sites with a mix of prior agricultural use and shallow development fill. Fill sites require compaction verification testing before we accept the subgrade as ready for concrete base — we require a compaction test report on any fill placed by others before placing base stone.
