A concrete patio is impervious surface, and many Carmel lots carry a coverage limit — through zoning or through HOA covenants — that caps how much of the lot can be hard surface for stormwater reasons. Drainage and base. Everything else is finish work. A patio that slopes toward the house drives water at the foundation every time it rains, and no sealer or finish corrects that later. We build a minimum 2% fall — a quarter inch per foot — away from the foundation, established in the subgrade before stone goes down, consistent with ACI 360R guidance for slabs-on-ground.
The base is the other half. Four inches of #53 INDOT stone compacted to Standard Proctor density is what keeps the slab from settling differentially once the soil under it goes through a few wet-dry cycles. Cutting the base short is invisible on handover day and obvious in year three, when one corner has dropped and the joints have opened.
The load isn't the reason — Indiana's freeze-thaw cycling is. A 4000 PSI air-entrained mix has the entrained air-void structure that lets the paste absorb freeze expansion without spalling, the surface damage you see on older patios where the top layer flakes away. A weaker mix carries patio furniture fine and still fails at the surface within a decade of Hamilton County winters.
Pool-deck surrounds are a big share of Carmel patio work. A pool deck is a patio with extra requirements: positive drainage away from the coping, a slip-resistant finish, and expansion detailing where the deck meets the pool structure. We pour the deck as a properly jointed 4000 PSI slab rather than a thin topping, and coordinate the finish — broom, exposed aggregate, or stamped — with the pool and the home. Coverage math matters more here too, since a pool plus its deck is a lot of impervious surface at once.
Established neighborhoods vs. newer subdivisions scope differently. Older Carmel homes near City Center and the Range Line corridor often have mature trees and tighter access, which shapes how material reaches the backyard and where roots affect the subgrade. Finish integration is expected, not upsold. In Carmel, a plain broom patio is often not what the home calls for — a stamped border, an integral-color field, or an exposed-aggregate surface ties the patio to the architecture. Drainage has a neighbor dimension on tighter lots. Sloping water away from your foundation is non-negotiable, but on a narrower lot the obvious direction can send it toward a neighbor's yard. Establishing where water actually ends up — not just that it leaves your slab — is part of the layout, and it's easier to solve with grading and a drain before the pour than with a complaint after.
